SCULPTURE ARTIST RESEARCH

Rachel Whiteread

also known as Dame Rachel Whiteread is an English artist who creates sculptures from casts of materials such as resin. her casted art focuses  on mimicking the impression of realism from the places she re creates as sculptures. Rachel is most renowned for creating a concrete cast of an entire old Victorian house the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial house in Vienna, alongside being the first woman to win the annual Turner prize. much of her re created sculptures and casts are the impression of taking ordinary domestic objects and pieces of life and turning that into negative space focusing on aspects such as open areas and architecture in her casts. her direction takes that of line and form using details and indents in the natural moulds to create her sculptures.

in the 1980s Rachel whitehead studied painting and sculpture at the Brighton polytechnic slade school of fine art. her largest solo gallery featured her sculpture piece Ghost. an exhibition holding the casted sculpture made from a room house on archway road north London. this piece specifically relating to her own home much like her other works of art. one of her sculpture piece being reminiscent of her childhood memories this sculpture was that of an interior cast of an wardrobe. both her parents were passed in a spectrum of art and architecture. her childhood being based in London. her fathers interest of architecture and urban houses impacted her artistic style and choices. her art displaying the concept that her sculptures in process reveal daily life the traces of former uses and previous lives.

in as sense I believe her art is directive between memories and a practical stance of a permanent perspective taking a mould of something to keep forever showing through as sculpture the essence and the reminiscent memories of what the sculpture once was.

Antony Gormley

sir Antony mark David Gormley is a British sculptor and is was the youngest of seven, his mother being German and his father Irish. he attended a boarding school college in Yorkshire before gaining interest towards the history of art at the trinity college of Cambridge.as a student he typically travelled the world. He later attended saint martins school of arts and goldsmiths in London from 1971 graduating in sculpture and completing a postgraduate course at slade university school of fine art London. in 1981 he held a solo exhibition at Whitechapel art gallery.

Antony’s work is based around the human body and creates his sculptures as a subject of that form to create metal casts in his own words he states” an attempt to materialise the place at the other side of appearance where we all live”

Antony’s work has been featured across the uk with exhibitions ranging across the world in London, Greece, Shanghai Philadelphia and so on.

His art to what I believe is based on a surreal perspective of how life or the human body can be represented. to his own agenda it parallels the reality of this world to the other perspective I his art like a mirror. I believe his art takes on a slightly  paranormal approach to representing one own soul in a human figure. his sculptures and drawings carrying across his desired creative mind or the human body and space.
