COMPOSITION AND PERSPECTIVE WEEK 2

HOMEWORK OUTLINE:

  • arrange a time to talk together with your group and discuss ideas on landscapes of your worlds. think about aesthetics of composition and how to best convey the mood of your world
  • trace 3- one and two point perspective draw overs from your favourite animations
  • 12 thumbnail drawings of composition based on your world theme in 16:9 or 2:39:1 anamorphic ratio – consider using one, two or three point perspective
  • start to concept and ideate basic creatures/characters forms and shapes within your world
  • This can be done in sketchbook or digitally. keep your studies to a simple tonal range- focus on composition not details/blending tones- for example silhouetted thumbnails that explore composition rules and also express personality of your world e.g tranquil, playful, chaotic, scary and inhospitable

PERSPECTIVE AND COMPOSITION STUDIES FROM THREE FAVOURITE ANIMATED SHOWS:

For these studies I decided to practice the different types of perspective and composition rules by using backgrounds and scenes from my favourite animated movies.

The prince of Egypt study was interesting as I learned that the movie used a lot of compositions which focused on a one point perspective. They used a lot of composition with triangular language such as the pyramid to convey an underlaying message of Egypt being great. To explain without words the cultural and world building divide between the ritch and poor. The compositions  used represent power showing the great buildings as the focal point being bigger and more grand but also looming over everything else showings its dominance in the movies world.

  • STEVEN UNIVERSE

  • THE CAT RETURNS

  • THE PRINCE OF EGYPT

12 THUMBNAIL DRAWINGS OF COMPOSITION AND PERSEPACTIVE STUDIES BASED ON GROUP WORLD THEME:

  • MOUNTAIN BIOME

Improvements after feedback:

I realised I focused too heavily on tone and lighting on the first thumbnails not fully understanding the task. this cause most of my time to be spent on the tonal lighting rather than perspective and composition. I decided tore-draw the thumbnails and simplify them to focus more on composition.

I simplified everything down  understanding basic shapes and arrangements of the background, midground foreground and the positioning where each object sits. i tried my hardest to have the main perspective be clear.

I was later given feedback that most of my compositional angles and perspectives were to flat and kept using one point perspective rather than experimenting with the different techniques, i was told it could be improved my using different perspectives. I believe from this feedback I have learnt how to be more experimental when it comes to my work and think I should keep developing my compositional and perspective skills.
