Photography Photo book

This was me attempting to form a sequence out of my photographs before deciding on a final timeline for my photo book

For my photo book, I decided to focus on the chaos and blur that often my everyday life can be. These photos follow me around university, fencing, work, and everyday life between my home in Belfast and responsibilities in Coleraine. Though often there is a harsh break in my photo sequence that looks into me more as an individual without the busyness exploring the fact that I am and identify as a transgender man. As seen in my photobook extra details and decoration usage becomes null after the first few pages, this was to illustrate how my energy feels as though it is gone throughout the day.

The photos themselves are printed on paper, adding a fragile and breakable aspect to my piece that for me represents how often my plans and routine can be left in pieces due to the amount of work that often I need to do.

Additionally, the photos contain no black ink, offering a more exposed look to them. This makes them more eye-catching to the audience due to it highlighting different parts of the picture and for me, it represents the daze my day can be.

For the more individual breaks in the book, I switched between two outfits, a more stereotypical one I have with heels and a more masculine one. The feminine side is illustrated as being killed or upset while the masculine side seems more confident.

Sculpture/lens Day two/three

My final piece for the Sculpture/Lens workshop was made of cardboard, plastic discs, tape, black and white card, metal wire, fabric, magazine pages, bubble wrap, plastic sheets, paper, and a wooden block. Together they formed a wheel that was able to be rotated to allow the video to be protected on the different materials within the same shot. This piece was inspired by Joan Jonas’ creation called “Vertical Roll” which I explored further in my contextual knowledge research.

Please see the below link for a video demonstrating how the wheel can turn and all different materials can become visible.

This was the result of my work, with the video projected on my sculpture. I tried to experiment more and edit this video slightly to add a similar “glitching” effect as the inspiration video by Joan Jonas

Final piece for Fine Art/photography

For this project, I attempted to challenge myself and combine the aspects of sculpture, lens, and painting. I planned to make a diorama themed around a hobby of mine-fencing.

I started off by using acrylic paint to create a basic coat for the sports hall background
I then used a black/brown wash and dry brushed white, black, and red to create highlights and details. To add to the scene I created a piste (a metal grey piece of floor that is used to fence on during competitions), a drink can, and a table containing the scoring lights out of cardboard. These and the fencing silhouettes on each wall were coloured using acrylic paint and oil pastel

Next, I used a video from the day prior of a fencing competition I had attended and participated in. This video was projected onto the walls of the piece

Please see below for a video showing the full video being projected onto the piece-

I used the live video being projected onto my piece to paint (using gouache on A3 paper) the image. This helped me to add movement to my art as I captured both the static diorama and the dynamic projection
I wanted to experiment further so used a combination of oil pastel (to illustrate the background first) and then gouache paint on top (to illustrate the projection)

This was each component of my final piece together. Overall I used cardboard, A3 paper, tape, acrylic, gouache, oil pastel, and pencil in my pieces.

Fine Art Sculpture/Lens planning and videos (Day one)

Mind maps using words from earlier group discussions
I tried to formulate my ideas in order to help strike inspiration for any video ideas

  1. Flame

I started off with a video of a lighter flame

2. Fencing

After that, I tried to incorporate an interest of mine that would use a lot of movement

Construction

Belfast streets

While wandering around Belfast, I took videos of things around me. Whether they could be used as the main subject of the video or as a secondary aspect.

3. Burning paper

4. Pouring water

5. Stars against wall

However, I wanted to go back to the drawing board and attempt to simplify these video ideas to single movements, leading to the above creations to add to the earlier “Flame” and “Fencing” videos. The fifth video I added a slow motion effect.

Finally I collected a still image from each of the videos:

Photography group project

I worked alongside Jude, Letitia, and Rebecca to construct our narrative of two tourists exploring Belfast while seemingly being followed by two figures who always appear in the background, perhaps ghosts? I really enjoyed this project as we limited our prop usage and tried to focus on angles, effects and perspectives.

We started off with the ghosts being spotted outsite the cathedral

As well as seemingly an old photograph of the two strangers

The tourists stopped off to take photos…A couple of ghosts just visible in the background

What the tourists thought were innocent photos of the city had some unexpected outcomes

And as quick as they appeared, the ghosts vanished…
