Denim challenge

Using a pair of black denim jeans I embroidered an abstract layered portrait onto the fabric with various types of stitches. I used different colours to block out different shadows and highlights. In this way I made the denimn into a canvas, however I was not done. I planned to layer more denimn in order to make the piece resemble a hand mirror with the extra fabric ribbon stitched on to produce a 3D effect and help the piece not feel stuck on the denim canvas

PROJECT TWO-

For my second denim piece I wanted to combine dying fabric using natural means and stitching.

First I attempted to dye the fabric using red cabbage, red onion and avocado (both skins and pip).

Next I used a thin thread to stitch the pieces together onto a patchwork pattern as I wanted the project to have a more chaotic and random feel to it then the first project where areas of shade had to be precise.

After this I stitched together the sides and gaps to create a pouch bag, using the button from the original pair of jeans for the buckle.

I experimented with the type of buckle the bag would have or if it would be a strong drawn one instead. I settled on using the seam of the Jean legs to create a handle and stapled then in place to provide extra support.

As a final touch due to not being satisfied with how the colour dying came out-I dipped the bag in a jar of beetroot juice and let the colour travel up the bag.

Once washed and dried off this was the final result. A functional, patchwork denim bag.

For me this project was exploring aspects of the workshop I was unfamiliar with, this is the first time I have tried tying something using natural meals and stitching together the material. This experimental and trail and error made it overall very enjoyable and satisfying for the end result.

TADF-embroidery

Pen on paper to illustrate interpretations of lines

Embroidery thread on fabric related to my colour schemes to illustrate my nine favourite lines using various types of stitching techniques

Negative space drawing

Using both hands at the same time

Using oil pastel on A2 paper, I created various drawing using different methods annotated on each drawing.

Using the three A2 oil pastel illustrations of fabric textures and patterns I made a collages shown above. In the 15 minute time limit I also used ink to illustrate my classmate.

Ceramics

For this workshop I used a black fine-liner to sketch architecture near the university campus on paper.

Using my sketches I created a clay creation with structural support. For windows I cut into the clay and layered scraps on top to creat windowsills and panels. Using a craft knife I carved into the clay to create a bricked texture. Additionally I painted sections of the building and carved into it. Stepping away from the reference I constructed a bin and a mouse hole into the piece to both challenge myself to make external objects and add a personal touch.

Product design

This folding method is something I used to do for book fairs in secondary school. The book was made to resemble a hedgehog due to the layered folding.

Above I attempted to create fluid movement and light manipulation through paper. The first photo I decided to take further and develop further into a final piece.

I wanted to experiment by placing lights inside the creation.

Fashion Design-fabric drawings

For this workshop I challenged myself to look at the figure from various angles and use different materials for every piece.

White chalk and black fine tip pen on beige A3 paper

Pen and masking tape which is both layered and cut away to create texture and a 3D aspect to the piece
Ink on A3 paper to illustrate fabric
In my own time I used ink on A5 paper to illustrate one my fencing friends due to the interesting texture and layering of our fabric and uniform

Fashion design-shoe

As seen above I used the template to create a shoe using faux leather, foam board as a strong base and pins to hold it in place with the addition of safety clips as a decorative feature.

i wanted to bring in the theme of layers more from the TADF workshop section and the paper aspect of the product design section of the workshop. This shoe was themed around a stiletto heel and a horse hoof, the paper feathered to create the illusion of fur.
