Fashion workshop – shoe design

For this task, I chose to base my work on the ’70s, more specifically the “flower power”/hippy/”peace and love”, period of this era! I decided on a tight colour scheme for my pattern designs to ensure a cohesive feel. I didn’t want to choose the obvious, bright, almost tie-dye-inspired colour way, so I settled on a muted pallette that I feel goes perfectly with the spiritual, grounded, connected to the Earth feel. Find below my shoe and pattern design!

Mood Board

For my mood board, the word ‘layers’ to me immediately reminded me of the plethora of layers in nature – layers within sedimentary rocks, layers within food such as onions, bananas, and carrots, layers within trees, as well as how natures layers with the industrial human design, such as moss and weeds growing on pavement or on brickwork. As my theme stemmed from a lot of natural elements, I wanted to keep my colour palette within the natural theme – utilising blues, greens, reds, oranges, etc. I found inspiration in the fashion industry in the maximalist style layering that makes incredible use of various fabrics, textures, and colour ways.

Product design – Main paper sculpture

For my large paper sculpture, I decided to progress with one of my original designs. This basic concept was created by folding a fan fold, but starting off with a triangle to create the tiered design. As this design had the ability to fold out, I wanted to create a finished piece that would highlight the depth within each shape, and allow for an interesting viewing experience in relation to shadow and highlights.
