Anatomy of Type

February 11, 2021 - Blogs

The anatomy of type refers to the structure of typography. Just like the anatomy of humans, it is important to understand to be able to make diagnoses. This is the same with type. Understanding the anatomy of type helps to see what is wrong and right in type, use it effectively and be able to talk appropriately about it with other designers.

For this exercise I had to select a typeface (I chose Libre Caslon Text) and type my name. I used this to identify elements of type and label them. This was to better understand the elements of typography that I can work with, remove or manipulate to produce a unique wordmark. My exercise is shown below. I created it in Figma.

To help me with this exercise, I used this images below as a guide to the anatomy of text.
