Class:

During the class this week we looked at the assignments and what is expected of us, for example, interviews, CVs, etc. We then looked at the different jobs that are involved in the industry.

Homework:

For homework we were tasked with researching different roles in animation, looking through job sites to find entry level positions and finding a person currently in the role that you are interested in.

—Task 1 – Roles within Animation—

  • Concept Artist: A concept artist creates a variety of initial ideas for a project which portrays different looks and styles that the project could use based off of the story created by the writer.

  • Storyboard Artist: A storyboard artist creates quick but clear storyboards that capture the feeling and look of the scene based on the script that allows the timing and compositions of the scenes to be planned out before any major plans are set in motion.

  • Character Designer: A character designer creates model sheets and finalised designs based off of what the concept artist has created and what the producers want. The model sheets ensure that the animators stay ‘on model’ throughout the course of the production.

  • Modeller: A modeller creates models based off of concept art and can make a physical model to use as reference or a 3D model which can then be used directly in the project.

  • 2D Animator: A 2D animator can have a variety of jobs from creating keyframes for an animation to drawing the in-betweens of those keyframes. They can also refine sketches to clean line art that stays ‘on model’ based off of the model sheets the character designer creates.

—Task 2 – Job Searching = Entry Level Jobs—

Junior Animation Assistant for RAW Pictures Ltd

I like the sounds of becoming a junior animation assistant for RAW Pictures as you can apply at entry level and I often prefer to create 2D animations and they are looking for ‘a strong emphasis on 2D work’ but I’m not overly well versed in the use of Adobe suite, After Effects or Illustrator. I also like that they work with a wide variety of clients thus needing to create a wide range of different types and styles of animations. One of the benefits that this position provides is the ability to work from home which I would prefer to do then having to move due to current circumstances.

—Task 3 – Artist Research—

Vivienne Maree Medrano also known as Vivziepop is an American animator, writer, character designer and voice actor.

Vivienne studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and graduated in 2014 and majored in traditional animation. In 2016 she moved to California and worked as an animator on the series ‘Too Loud!’ alongside Ashley Nichols, a clean up artist. During this period she posted some of her personal works like a webcomic called ‘Zoophobia’ and her thesis films titled ‘The Son of 666’ and ‘Timber’.

Vivienne is currently producing two animated shows that can be viewed on Youtube called ‘Hazbin Hotel’ and ‘HelluvaBoss’ which is entirely made by freelance animators and isn’t suitable for a younger audience.

She often posts on her social media about current progress of her animations and any trips she has recently taken with the cast and crew of her shows, she also likes to post pictures of her cats.
