IXD301: Week 6 Review

Promotional Strategy

This week we learned about the importance of developing a strategy to promote yourself and your work. This will enable us to build connections with people in preparation for placement.

The promotional 3-pronged approach:

  1. Portfolio site

This is the best way to showcase your work to potential clients or employers. It goes into much more detail than a CV as users get a visual of what you can do. It is then important to promote your website using social media.

  1. Social profiles

Social media is one of the best ways to get yourself out there and begin making connections and build your audience. You can use it to tell a story and show the process of your work. For example, using Instagram stories to show behind the scenes of your work and then posting the final product. This can show potential employers how you think and go about solving problems, making you more memorable.

You must be able to use social media effectively. For example, think about timing and when your audience is likely to be online. this will increase engagement with your posts. You should also be sure to keep your social media consistent with your website. Make sure to provide a link to your portfolio site in your bio to drive people to your site.

  1. Inspiration

When completing projects, it’s important to gain inspiration from different areas. This research will show you different approaches you can take and give you more knowledge on the topic. Some good places to go to for inspiration include platforms like Pinterest and Tumblr. You can also be inspired by your environment.

This week’s lecture was very beneficial as it encourages me to get myself out there and promote the work I do. This will benefit me when looking for a placement.
