In Week One of our Animation Studio module, our homework task was to choose three of our favourite animated characters from shows or videos and study their underlying forms by tracing and simplifying their designs into their main components.
The three characters I ended up choosing were Raphael from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2018-2022), Eda the Owl Lady from The Owl House (2020-) and lastly Sonic the Hedgehog, specifically the design from the Sonic Mania Adventures (2018) series of shorts posted on Youtube.
From this exercise I learned how to analyze character designs and identify the main points and shapes that construct their character designs, along with how the shape language of each character communicates their personalities, abilities and roles in their respective media.
