Week 3: Sound and Editing

We started the class by talking about types of sound that is found in media.

There are two types of sound: diegetic and non-diegetic.

Diegetic sound is sound that exists within the world’s logic (car engine sounds, trees rustling, rain), while non-diegetic sound exists outside the world’s logic (internal dialogue, music, comedic sound effects etc).

Sound design is the creation and recording of sound to use in media.

Sound mixing is the editing of sound.

This video is a good representation of the process.

Then, we talked about editing.

Classical continuity is seamless, invisible editing that follows the flow of movement and time.

Soviet montage is dramatic, energetic and informal, also known as ‘MTV style’.

Temporal logic is the logic of time. Stories aren’t told in real time, as editing makes the action concise. Time can be manipulated for effect.

Continuity editing

  • Intercutting – cutting between two scenes to show relationship
  • Match-of-action – a shot change where the action is seamless
