IXD104 project 2 – Making my infographic in Illustrator

Before I start my infographic project in illustrator, I have one last master-apprentice excise given to us by our teacher Pual.

The point was to practice our skills in making piecharts and graphs, to prepare us for our infographic project.

There are the 2 pictures I chose to replicate;

and here is my replicated results ( excise done in illustrator);

I’m very happy with how the result, it gave me confidence that I can replicate something similar for my own infographic.

To start my own infographic, I came up with a title and tried out different fonts;

I wanted something that was bubbly and fun, a font that was interesting but not over the top and hard to read. In the end, I went with the first font, I really like the curly tails.

Another important thing I needed to consider for my infographic is the colour. I created a quick mock timescale and tried out many colours, before deciding on a mix between 2 very similar colour pallets. I like the combination of cute pastel and darker blues, which is fun and inviting, but not too childish;

Next, I made the timescale accurate to the length of time each Eons represents. everything 10 little squares are 200 million years;

I first tried this design, where every image was enclosed in a circle;

After consulting with my teacher paul, I realised that the circles were not necessary. Also, the pointers were not either. In class we came up with a better design;

With this design in mind, I revamped my infographic a little;

Having done this, the infographic felt a little top heavy. I did try making the earth at the bottom bigger as well, but then the 2 earths at the top and bottom just overshadowed the whole infographic. However, I liked the stages of the earth intersect the timeline, so I modified my infographic yet again;

I like this design much better, I also made the 3rd earth more detailed, cause in the last design it was looking a little bare compared to the others.

Next, I designed some images to go with my timeline, here are some of the characters I drew in adobe fresco;

While re-confirmation some facts on my infographic I came across this pie chart. I thought it very unique in the way in which it presented the information, I liked how it was able to present the time scale of the Eons and the time scale of how life evolved at the same time without being overwhelming ;

Earth's history with time-spans of the eons to scale

Inspired, I decided to do a modification of this pie chart;

I absolutely love the end result, but if I had known beforehand how long it would take I might have been discouraged from doing it. It took me the whole night to learn how proportions correct and to make the lines bend into circles. I’m sure there are easier ways to do it, and that’s what I need to work on.

I also added in a ” did you know?” section, I thought the fact was very fitting sitting beneath the pie chart which showered the life and the evolution of life on earth;

Once I added in all the images, the infographic is almost complete. The last few touches include hierarchy. Making important words bigger and have them in a different colour;

And with that, we are all finished! I’m so happy with the way it turned out, my classmates agree with me that they can see it being put into a primary/secondary school where it can give the children their first introduction to earth’s history. Here is the end product;
