 What/Who are the Nielsen Norman Group?

The Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) are a UX research and consulting firm trusted by leading organizations world-wide to provide reliable guidance on user experience.

What is User Experience?

User experience is the overall experience of a person using a product such as a website or computer application, especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use. User experience includes all the users’ emotions, beliefs, preferences, perceptions, physical and psychological responses, behavior and accomplishments that occur before, during, and after use.

Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman, the founders are recognized around the world for their leadership in defining the field of UX. Together, they formed an elite firm dedicated to improving the everyday experience of using technology.

The NN/g find out which designs work best by studying real users around the world as they interact with actual websites and applications. They believe it is more important to rely on what users actually do, rather than what they say they do. Their findings help teams and brands improve their UX designs and ultimately create a better experience for their users and in their 20 years of business, they’ve evaluated thousands of websites and applications, and consulted for leading brands in virtually every industry, including Deloitte and even Paypal.

Don Norman

Jakob Nielsen is a Danish web usability consultant and the co-founder of NN/g. He holds a Ph.D. in human–computer interaction from the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen. Don developed a list of 10 heuristics for interaction design.

They are available to download in poster form and include many tips, which I am going to try and recognise, especially when it comes to creating websites and apps. They are written simply with diagrams which get their intention across. It’s a really effective collection of information which is still relevant, even after over 2 decades.
