While I’d picked up the principles of 3D hard surface modelling quite quickly, I initially really struggled with sculpting/soft surface modelling, and having been so upbeat at the end of assignment one, found taking this backward step quite disheartening. Admittedly, I was often tempted to revert back to the familiarity of using ‘edit’ mode, but instead invested time and effort into practicing this side of 3D model creation, and am delighted with the progress I’ve made.

Having always been taught to draw in proportion, at the outset I found it difficult to replicate Genndy Tartakovsky’s unique, exaggerated, cartoony style, but in the end, given my existing Blender skills, I believe I’ve designed and created an appealing character that reflects this particular style.

Other take-home messages from this assignment, that will surely stick with me and improve my future work, are the importance of creating my models with clean topology, and when encountering issues, to use my knowledge and problem-solving skills to retopologise them as I go along; as too is the importance of investing time into character development, and to plan each stage, which will ultimately make completing future projects much easier.

So here I am again filled with enthusiasm and a love for 3D modelling, and despite the prospect of more hard work, I’m ready for my next challenge!
