First week of the animation studio we were given a task to study the shape and forms of cartoon characters. We picked 3 of my favourite cartoon characters. Shape is very important when it comes to characters design. It helps the audience determine who is who in a scene. The shape also helps translate the characters personality and role. Circles are safe and friendly shapes, squares are strong and masculine and triangles are used for villains.
Commander Peepers – Wander Over Yonder
This characters is very cartoony and uses a lot of round shapes. The head is a basic sphere shape with a lighting bolt which is the main characteristic of the character. The round cartoony shapes makes it easier to draw dramatic poses.
Ilana – Sym Bionic Titan
Ilana from Sym Bionic Titan uses a lot of pointy triangle shapes which is common in women cartoon characters. Her torso and waist is short compared to her legs which are dramatically long. This gives her an elegant and sassy silhouette.
Brock – The Venture Bros
Brock is strong solid structure and is made up of squares. Most of shapes such as arms and legs are thick to show he has muscles. With strong men characters you got to exaggerate their torso and chest just to show off their muscles.
