For this assignment I was asked to design and model a cute character. I must model or sculpt, texture and present it via Sketchfab.

Before I began to design my cute character, I made a mood board with characters that I think are cute. I looked at a range of different styles and ideas of what makes a character “cute”. Looking at most of these designs its easy to tell the features are exaggerated such as big eyes, little body and a big head.Next I sketched out some ideas of characters inspired by my research. I did a varirty of different concepts to see what I liked most. At first I went with the alien but then realised that it would be too complicated for a beginner at blender. Instead I went back and designed a cute and but simple demon dude.

Before I started modelling my model I watched a video for beginners on Blender and learnt some techniques I used on my model.

I started with blocking out my model out in Blender. I used a sphere and shaped it into the hat shape in my reference. I then went in with modelling tools to give the outside ring a better shape.

When I was done with hat I went and added another sphere for the face. I was happy enough with how looked and didn’t do modelling to it. At the top for the I added cones for the horns. I then added the body and shaped it to fit with head. Then I added cubes to block out the limbs and will add detail them later.

After I was happy enough with whole bodies shape I went and added the accessories. I modelled a pitchfork and used my knowledge from the previous assignment to make it. I also added a tail to the back and posed it so that it showed with the pose.

I was happy enough to smooth the model and I thought it looked good. I was ready to import into maya and start UV mapping and adding details.

I started to UV mapping the model and making sure the parts were connected properly together. I had to make sure of this as I was texturing and adding colour in Substance Painter. I did this process with all the other parts.

Before importing it into Substance painter I added a floating pupils to the eyes and a mouth. I liked the look of this and decided to keep it.

I imported the model into substance painter and began to start painting and adding textures. For the body I used a clothing material to make it look a onesie. For the face I used a skin texture and changed the colour and added some details such as bags under the eyes and his cheeks. For the spear I used a metallic texture so that it would stand out from the rest

Overall this was a fun assignment to do and I did enjoy myself. However I liked the designing and concept art part of the task more than the actual 3D modelling. I did thoroughly enjoy doing my research on cute characters and using the elements to create my own. I did find Blender easier to use more than Maya as the controls were easier to find and do. Overall I am  very happy with how my model turned out for my first time using Blender. I feel like the model looks better than the concept art but I should have made it look more like the actual illustration. I did find the UV mapping hard, as trying to make the map connect and not mess up was difficult and it took a couple of times to get it right.  I do need to expand my knowledge on 3D modelling and definitely need a lot more practice. I find that the programs and theory very difficult to understand. I feel like the practice videos and challenges were hard to do on my own and needed some more guidance. I could have done better if we were in more of a classroom setting but with the current situation that wasn’t possible.
