Concept Designs for my Group
Group 8
For group 8 we wanted to do a plant world were the plants are alive and human like. I started making concept designs for a scientist who would go to the plant world and study it.
Character Design Concepts
For Group 8 are protagonist of the story was a scientist that was studying an alien plant planet. For starters I looked at a younger protagonist such as a little girl. She would be a young explorer and I wanted to show this in her design. I wanted her to bold and fun so I went for an astronaut look. The big boots, gloves and hair gives her a unique silhouette. For the next design I wanted to do a younger women with more of a scientist look. I wanted to make her quirky so I added big glasses, a fluffy bag and pink boots. This gives her a little bit of a personality and you can tell she’s a nice person.
For the plant aliens I experimented with different types of plants, leaves and vegetables. The green one is based off of a lettuce. Looking at photos of lettuce I thought they looks like a skirt of a dress so incorporate that into the design. I also did an autumn leaf with a twiggy body.
Moving to Group 9
I was moved to Group 9 in the second week and to start trying new styles to fit the new theme. The new group had taken inspiration from the movie “The Lighthouse” so studied that before drawing. The main protagonists was a young man so I looked at the actor Robert Patterson who starred in “The Lighthouse”.
Main Character – Young Man
This week I was moved to group 9 which was the squid god. The group was very inspired by the movie “The Lighthouse” so when drawing concepts for the main protagonist I looked at the actor that starred in it, Robert Pattison. When designing I did some different face shapes, hair, nose and eye shapes. When looking at description of the character he was tired looking and skinny.
For inspiration I looked at different actors and different clothing. His character aesthetic is like an explorer so I wanted the clothes to show that. I also experimented with the colour just to get a rough idea what it would look like. I will go back and try other colour combinations. Also I study his silhouette to make sure that it was recognisable to the audience.
Next I looked at the cult women in the submarine. The group discussed having the cult members to be skinny and malnourished. The group discussed about them being blind from malnutrition and sunlight. I thought it would be a good idea to experiment with eyes by adding no pupils to show that they were blind. Since they haven’t seen humanity for a long time their clothes would be rags and overall appearance would be dirty. Also since they worship a squid god I thought it would be a good idea to cover their arms and legs with ink.
We then discussed about making another protagonist for the story to show both sides of the cult. We decided she was not going to turn into a cult person at the end just to show the audience another side to the story. I thought it would be fun to make this character the opposite of the main protagonist. She would be more wary of the cult people compared to him.
Our group started to mess around with idea of making a group of teenagers instead of having one main protagonist. I though it would be a fun concept to have a group of teenagers going around a haunted shore submarine. I drew a quick sketch of the concept and made the clothes more of a late 90s feel. Most horror films in the 90s did centre around teenagers.
For the secondary character I looked at different styles of 90s clothing and hairstyles. I was still playing around with the idea of a group of teenagers. I went on Pinterest and I looked at different pictures for inspiration. I made a mood board just to show the group what I was going for, asked if they wanted to make any changes and give feedback.
Again playing around with a group of teens I drew quick concept art of what the characters would look like. However the group and I decided that we would stick to the original idea with just the main protagonist. We did decide to keep the women protagonist and make them a trio.
