Week 1 – Group Game & Art style Research

Intro of Group :

To start this first week in class our job was to work with another Games group and create a game with the participation of the other group where we had a new learning experience with another team. At the beginning, our group was divided into eight people, with four animators and four games. In order to have good communication in our group, we talked through Discord, where we had the idea of separating what each person was going to do in the project.

Game Ideas & Script:

In order to start coming up with ideas for our Animator group, we started talking about what the story of the game would be. We had three ideas to choose from, but the one we liked best and the one the tutors were most interested in was the third idea, so we had a bridge to start our style ideas from.

Game:

You finally afforded your own home in a cozy hill town with your beautiful wife. But… the town is frequently hit with devastating earthquakes! Can you survive an earthquake when your house, the house you just bought, is crumbling down? Can you prove yourself a master builder by fixing your home on the spot as its breaking around you? Will you have the skills to juggle different types of damage while ensuring your wife’s safety?

Soft Fantasy:

In order to better understand how to work with the Soft Fantasy style, I did some research to better understand what the style is, the positive and negative points of creation, the different types of styles there are in soft fantasy etc…

Padriag and I had a chat with the group and we really liked Fortnite is style, where the style was soft fantasy and we chose this style to work on the character.

  • About:

A brief summary of the “softer” style of soft fantasy would be stories that include fantastic elements without the presence of hardcore fantasy elements, such as dragons, elves and trolls for films.
Soft fantasy has a more “Fantasy” style where it shows more worked-out styles with the characters in their catering and also with fun points for the audience to play with fun points like flying, jumping from high points, vibrant and well-detailed designers.

  • Characteristics:

Stylised game art uses simplified, exaggerated or abstract elements to create a distinctive and expressive aesthetic for the game. Cel-shading, low-poly and pixel art are some of the techniques used to achieve stylised shapes, colours and effects. This type of art can add charm, personality and uniqueness to a game, especially for the platform, puzzle and fantasy genres.

  • Negative point:

However, stylised game art can also present certain challenges. For example, it can be difficult to convey complex or subtle information, emotions or themes through stylised visuals. In addition, it can become outdated or irrelevant over time due to trends and fads. In addition, some players may prefer or dislike certain styles or genres, which can make it more polarising and subjective.

  • Soft Fantasy & Hard Fantasy:

Reflection:

After doing some research, taking notes and better understanding how ‘Soft Fantasy’ styles work, I began to take a keen interest in this style of game. My idea was to use a very fun style for the character, using a fantasy style with vibrant colour points and strong tones that would draw the audience’s attention to aspects of the soft fantasy style.
