Going into Semester 2, we started our Animation for the Creative Industries module and our Vertical Slice group projects My group narrowed our initial ideas down to three that we gave in a pitch presentation. Those being:
- “A survival game inside a breaking submarine with many fixing minigames.”
- “Puzzle Platformer where the character’s mood alters the weather.”
- “A frog on a lily pad floating down stream and avoiding obstacles.”
Below are the slides I had created for our ideas presentation that go into more detail.
After giving our presentation, we were told that idea 1 best to go with. We then spent time discussing ideas such as inspirations, minigame tasks and secondary mechanics to add substance to the gameplay loop.
Due to being in the mixed animation category in the module, we decided to use 2D animation for our playable character, and 3D models for our game environment which would suit the side-scrolling “2.5D” style we wanted. We then spent the first week doing independent research on three different styles, which we would then compare and select a final art style to go for.
The three styles we decided on were:
- “Saturday Morning” Friendly Cartoony
- AAA Exaggerated Realism
- Clean Sci-Fi
