poster

The group looked briefly into the history of Irish animation and while there is some in the past it was mostly American animation that got outsourced to Irish studios. The biggest studio in Ireland is Cartoon Saloon.

We then split up our roles to help make the poster. We split the research into the history of the studio itself, the short films that were made and the feature length trilogy. I am focusing on the design of the poster itself.

I initially began by looking at other posters. I like the graphic style in some of the ones I found as I feel like the information is clearly presented. I mostly focused on other research/information posters. Most of the posters I had had 3/4 colours and bold geometric shapes. They use the geometric shapes to lead the audiences eyes so I will try to do that in my design.

I also wanted to include a website like design to add some more visual interest.

I like the idea of the window pop ups but I want a more sleek modern look.

I used this website to help with the colour scheme https://www.canva.com/colors/color-wheel/

I initially wanted to go for a website like design but after feedback from the lecturers that it needed to be more artistic and less wordy so I scrapped this. I failed to take what I liked about my inspiration into this version. It is way too text filled so I need to figure out how to convey the research into a few bolder words.

For the second iteration I really wanted to take layout into way more consideration so I looked at flow charts.

This is a midway look for the second design I like the simple graphics as it is similar to the inspiration posters but I feel like I will need to add more detail to make it more artistic again. I do like how it is more like my original inspiration with a larger focus on geometric shapes and leading the audiences eyes.

Trying to make it less wordy compared to the first draft is still a challenge as the research the group sent me was really wordy. I even asked them to send a more condensed form that could be put on the poster so that I could focus on making it look good but it was still a lot to get through. the person who was looking into the history of the studio initially sent a over 1000 word document which was good but then they wouldn’t condense it down so someone else went and did that instead.

I need to add images from the films itself but this is the mostly completed version. I still need to find some way to make it more artistic. I may try experimenting with drawing a border or just drawing some kind of graphics on it to add more visual interest.

I am doing the second version on photoshop which I’ve never really used before so it is a good learning experience in design and on how to use the program.

To give it some more visual interest and cohesion i added and changed some things to do with the layout of the poster. due to very little replies from the group I had to ask my family for their critiques as people who know nothing about animation and they gave a few pointers. I am not 100% happy with the outcome but I am happy overall I would like to work on it a little more however I need to allow enough time for it to be printed.

I eventually got some feedback and changed it accordingly.

Seeing the poster printed was nice as it actually felt like my hard work went toward something. Although I noticed some mild spelling and grammar mistakes I made. This is why I asked my group to proofread the poster as well because it can be hard to notice your own mistakes in a piece of written text. Clearly no one did this so I fixed things for the submitted version of the poster. I looked around at everyone else’s poster I noticed they were very text heavy compared to my groups.

On the day we presented the poster’s cartoon saloon released a new short as apart of ‘Star Wars visions season 2’ their episode was called ‘screecher’s reach’ they managed to include Irish storytelling into a sci-fi fantasy. This has really opened my eyes to the opportunities still here on the island as in sixth form we were told we would have to go to mainland Britain/Europe or over to North America.
