Emotion/Personality Animation – Impatience

Initally with this idea I wanted to include some audio and make the model do a little dance or shake to the music. I came up with the idea because I was listening to the song ‘Russian Roulette’ by Red Velvet. The start of it just got me bopping and I thought that the bopping thing would be cool for an animation

So I drew up a plan with simple movements for this animation. The movements are foot tapping and hip shaking, and maybe a little spin for a transition. I’m not sure if this actually conveys an emotion or personality but I liked the idea.

However, I found that the audio part was not easy to impliment into this idea as I thought so I then had to revamp the idea. I still wanted to do the foot tapping so the idea would be based around that. So the idea is now the model foot tapping and looking around. Hopefully this will convey something at the end. For this animation I will use the Monty Rig as it has a face and in general suits better to this idea than the Ultimate Walker.

This is my reference for a foot tap.

So the foot tapping was easy. So easy, I loved how easy and simple it was, and yet it looks so good when it animates. With that done it really all depended on what I would do with the rest of the body. I didn’t want the model to look awkward so the movement needed to look natural of some sort.

The second head movement I wanted it to seem like a head roll, making the model look fed up with something. I’m not sure that I’ve achieved that but there is a roll and it’s smooth which I am happy about. The combination of the head movement and foot tapping really do go well together and do suggest that the model is impatience which I think fits the brief for the animation.

Before finalizing the animation, I constantly checked the look with Playblasts with low quailty to make sure that the timing is right and the animation is smooth. This is a handy feature and it doesn’t take long to check things.

Impatience Animation

Initally the Monty Rig was coloured green, but I didn’t like that colour so I decided to change it to a nice blue. Makes it easier on the eyes.

I am happy with how it turned out. Although it wasn’t what I wanted at the start, the development changed for the better, as the idea I did want to do might have been out of my skill set at this moment. Looking at the animation is seems that the first head movement good have been better executed. The downward motion should have went at a lower angle for it to be more natural looking. Overall I’m glad I was able to at least convey an emotion or personality through this, and it isn’t a disaster.
