for this project we had to create a lip sync animation that was between 8-12 seconds long.

When I started this project I really struggled to figure out exactly how lip sync animations where created, I don’t do lip sync animations very often but when I do they are often all over the place since I’m trying to figure out timing and when the frames should change or not, I looked at multiple tutorials to try and help me.I knew I wanted to go for a hand drawn frame by frame style of animation.

YouTube videos-

I found all these videos very -helpful especially ones by Aaron Blaise they where very descriptive.

Then I was trying to figure out what audio I wanted to use, I created two lip sync animations before finally choosing the one I wanted to render out in the end, the first two animations helped me get a grip on the style and process and I decided to go for a more stylised approach on the end since the first two animations relied more heavily on the references I took of myself and with a more stylised style I could take some more creative liberties.

practice animations-

during the period of creating these animations I was going through a little burn out and was unhappy with how they both came out.I felt as though they where just not coming out in the way I wanted and I was still unsure on how to make a clean looking lip sync animation.

I then decided to use an audio from the tinker bell movie which I thought would be appropriate for a charcter I had made, I thought it was cute and had a lot of potential for animating different expressions and emotions and I thought I could try animation the characters accent into the lip sync.

chosen audio-

character used (I had to take away her rainbow hair as that would be very difficult to animate)-

Here is the process video of how i went on to create the animation-

I did this animation in 12 fps using Procreate , and as you can see in the video it just shows my roughs, then lined and coloured and then just the final video with the background.

I asked for feed back from difference friends and my class mates and I was told I could add her opening her eye when she is being spoken too, I thought this was a good idea so I implemented this into the animation, in the first draft of the animation I was also unhappy with how she said the line “ironic isn’t it” so i reanimated it to look for expressive  and bouncy.

Here is the background I had created for this animation- I tried to stylised it to fit in with the stylised character design-

Here is the final lip sync animation-

Overall I am happy with how my animation turned out and I think the first two animations I created really helped me figure out how to better create this one and I feel as though I really learnt something by doing this project.I now have a better understanding on how to properly time my animations and have them synced to the audio, I also feel like I have a better understanding on when it is appropriate to change frame or just keep the character still. However if I where to do this again I’d honestly want the character to move a bit more.
