Week 03: Design + Strategy

This week we looked at how new technology could impact future jobs, including designers with the development of new AI and machine learning applications. Fortunately for designers – AI is not advanced enough to be able to replace their work yet, and understand their motivations beyond algorithms. Human designers are able to empathise with users. They are able to apply a design principle across a range of variables, from form, to content, to function, in order to create a product that is both beautiful and usable. They can anticipate user needs and provide creative solutions. The challenge for the AI designer is to understand the work of the human designer.

But as AI becomes more capable, we could see a time in which they become obsolete.

The rise of robots does have some interesting implications, however, in terms of the labor market and the role of jobs in society.

BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal

BHAG — Why The Most Successful Companies Set Ambitious, Long-Term Goals & Why Yours Should Too

A BHAG—pronounced “bee hag”—is a long-term goal that everyone in a company can understand and rally behind. BHAGs are meant to excite and energize people in a way that quarterly targets and lengthy missions statements often fail to.

BHAGs are much bigger than goals—they are ideals. They are like a vision, but one that everyone in the company shares, and thus one that everyone is willing to work toward.

BHAG Examples

An example of a BHAG is SpaceX‘s goal of colonizing Mars. While the company’s short-term goals revolve around delivering a product—the first successful rocket launch – everyone working toward this BHAG has the incentive of saving humanity in the long run.

Progressing my project

  • Who is your digital product aimed at?
  • Are you targeting healthcare professionals? If so, who? Nurses, doctors, surgeons, support staff?
  • Are you targeting the public?  if so in what capacity?
  • What age are they?
  • Do they have access to digital devices?
  • Can they use digital devices?
  • What will your product do?

These are questions that I will need to consider when developing this new healthcare app idea. It’s important to put the user at the center of the design process. The best products are intuitive. They are easy to navigate. They have a look and feel that is consistent throughout.

I need to do some research on the industry and my target audience before I can really begin to make design decisions. To explore this better, I will need to collect more information as I continue my research.
