#IXD102- Week 1-When We Build, Wilson Miner

For todays class we were asked to watch a talk by Wilson Miner called “When we Build” and write down our thoughts on it.  This talk really motivated and inspired me to make the most out of what I do.

Wilson Miner is a well known digital designer from San Fransisco who has changed the modern society with designing Apple and Facebook. Marshall McLuhan said “We shape our tools and our tools shape us”. Miner opened his talk with this quote which immediately made me take full interest in what he had to say. He made me realise that anything is possible and the things we are able to achieve using skills we already have are endless. this made me really motivated and inspired to begin my Interaction Design career as I don’t know where it will take me but I know it will be great. We put so much time and energy into things, which in the grand scheme of things don’t matter. The tools we buy and love become a part of us and become symbols of how rich we are and what we are interests and passions are. They shape us into individuals. The smallest of inventions have changed the world forever. Even in a media saturated world, something as simple as a lightbulb shape our entire lives despite it not having a display screen or cannot provide us with any direct entertainment. Every tiny thing we bring into the world changes our lives and shape a new lifestyle for a while until the next thing is invented

Miner talked about how our world was filling up with screens, which are in turn shaping the environment. this again made me extremely motivated to make sure that screens are shaping the world in the most positive way possible. it made me realise that it will be my job to make sure that this happens and therefore I need to start thinking of ways in which I can make that happen.
