Overview.
For the class today, we are to work on our team projects while waiting for our one on one Secessions. This time the class is more free flowing as there is no direct trenching going on. This is really good for me as I can catch up with my team to talk about what happen last week and also create some 3D weapons in Maya.
In Class
Upon entering the room, I sought out one of my team member, Ben, who caught me up on any additional information I miss that was not in the notes sent over for last week. He said I did not miss to much in class that wasn’t in the notes and show me the sample texture and first generation modals made for the environment so far. With that in mind, I set up my laptop and began to create modals in Maya and test materials for them in Substance painter. For Maya the modals where also spilt up into materials layer types (I.e. metal, pattern 1, fabric) while also going over and fixing up their UV maps.
I made two helmets but they are really rough and I will have to go over them again if not start again. The square sword and shield came out well but the shield may need some more adjustments for it to fully come together and the sword’s UV maps need a complete rework as they are all messed up. The spear came together really well, even if it is a simple object. Because of this, I move the spear over to Substance painter to try out some of the pre made pro level textures. I am happy with the textures on the modal, but I will have to work with my team to create a color/material pallet better suited of Celtic culture. I with work with Najib or Michael next week to create one.
One on One Secessions
At 2.15pm, I meet up with the tutor, ‘ ‘ to discuss how I am finding my year and if I am having any problems with the course. These are the point I went over with him:
- The week I miss along with the work time due to the passing of my dog, Finn.
- Not knowing enough about the campus due to not work there during the first year because of lockdown guidelines.
- Imposter Syndrome and how I sometimes feel that I’m behind everyone else, even when counting I have ADHD and other mental health effects.
- I’m having some problems keeping the information in my head. I’m still learning new information, but I’m not remembering it as well as before lockdown.
Between each of my points the tutor, he talk me though some ideas and suggestions that could help me with these problems. I have listed these below in the order of their related problem:
- It ok for everyone to take time after a great loss. So long as the work is complete by the deadline I can take it easy. If I need more time I can get an extension if needed and the event of passing can allow me one.
- I could be using the wrong/out dated e-mail to contact student support. I’m being sent a update link and if it doesn’t work, ether the tutors or student council can show me around in ether non teaching class time or lunch. I should also not feel alone about this, as it is very common for all new students last year to feel this way.
- Do not worry about being good at everything. Unlike other places of learning, universities help improve upon the skills you are good at, while helping you learn the others. This is the time where people will be seeing what roles in the industry you are good at. Even if you are only decent at texturing, you could be amazing as a modeler. Do not compare yourself to everyone else, that will only cause you to dough your own ability. (He also look at my work and said I was doing a good job so far to help reinsure me.
- Don’t panicked. If your still learning something new that’s good. Sometimes you just need to go over your notes a few times before you get the hang of it.
This conversation was super helpful. Over the next week I’m am going to put these points into motion. Once the email comes around I will contact Student support to try and get a tour of the Uni building.
At Home/Rest of the Week
Due to last week, I have not caught up on my blogs yet so, I will be prioritize completing my past blogs first and getting them all caught up to date, before going forward with my modelling. I may also change the format of the blog going forward. There will be individual post like this covering any teaching of individual lessons like how to use Maya or the Theory of movement in a 3D environment. The difference will be one large, constantly updating blog post or page that will cover the prime task of creating the forge environment. This should be more in-depth and keep all the information in one place. I will also be adding more audio log in the future as well.
