Morning Class:.
For this morning’s class, Yuan reminded us to fill in the form from last week. We then covered what a research question is, some examples of previous questions and how to develop your research question. We also went over the factors that make a good research question; it should be clear and concise, focused, complex, original and arguable.
Next we covered what is research methodology, the different styles of research and data collection methods. After we covered what a literature review is, its purpose, some tips for writing a literature review and how to prepare your bibliography.
After that, we covered the research proposal; creating a title for your proposal, how to structure your dissertation or report and how to create a reading list for your work. Ensure that the proposal is formatted in the Harvard style. We were then shown some examples from previous years and the marking criteria.
Next we covered what time, date and tutor we would be receiving for group tutorials to discuss the proposal.
Got a break for 10 minutes.
Afterwards we got an introduction to the library electronic resources which covered ebooks, journals, databases and referencing. We were shown how to use the school library, the O’Reilly Learning database and how to use it, the different types of journals and what is a database. Next we were shown what ‘USearch’ is, how to use it and we were given a live demonstration of various searches and filters that USearch has.
