IXD301 Wk10:- The Art Of The Pitch

This weeks lecture was all about the art of the pitch and everything I would need to know about selling my ideas.

What makes a Good Presentation

  • A good presentation should always have a good story that is structured well. Every good story has a beginning, a middle and a end and so should a presentation.
  • A good presentation is well planned and prepared, you should always ensure that you are ready for your presentation.
  • A good presentation should also be coherent, people should understand what is being said and what the presentation is about.
  • A good presentation should be memorable, there is no point giving a presentation if no one will remember it, it should have an impact

You should plan the narrative for your presentation, this can be done by sketching out what you want your presentation to appear like and what will be said where, this is called a slide deck.

(I’m going to create a slide deck for my own presentation)

Its important that you are aware of the topic that you are presenting about as you want to be able to answer any questions that may arise

There’s a lot to think about when creating slides

  • When creating slides make sure that you don’t overload them with information or make them over complicated. People are there to hear you speak not watch you read from a screen (Need to make sure that within my presentation that I don’t overload it, not everything has to be shown, just the most important – this is a good chance to practice content prioritisation)
  • Don’t have too many slides, no one wants to watch you go through a 100 slide presentation in 10 minutes and on the other end don’t have too little slides where you are on one slide for the whole presentation

(I would personally try and aim for about 2 slides per minute)

Engage with the room when presenting, try to at least look in the direction of the audience so that its as if you are talking and having a conversation with them directly

Its okay to have notes but don’t read off it the whole time, quick glances should be enough. (Will probably bring notes or something with me just in case but will attempt to do presentation without)

One thing to remember is to be CONFIDENT
