What does it mean to be unique?

The world of branding is a very competitive market thus standing out is key. To be successful is to be good at being different so I must incorporate my most unique values into my brand to create a unique visual identity which can be widely recognized.

What can identify me?

  • Uniqueness
  • Value
  • Holding Power
  • Description
  • Association
  • Tone of voice
  • Graphic excellence
  • Reputation
  • Discretion
  • Repetition
  • Recognition

What can I apply this to?

  • Logos
  • Wordmarks
  • Visual marques
  • Colour palette
  • Typography
  • Graphic elements

Larger companies use identification extensively. Most large companies have communication departments that focus on building and maintaining identity. Although smaller businesses don’t have these kinds of departments its still holds just as much importance in becoming a successful brand. The mission of identity is to showcase and present my brand’s story so that I amass a loyal following whilst creating excitement, engagement and awareness of the brand. Identity is one of brands most successful elements.

Visual Marques

Abstract

Abstract marques are made from geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, etc and are usually more basic in nature.

Pictorial

Pictorial marques is a graphic based logo and are more stylistic and detailed than abstract. Pictorial is usually seen as more recognizable and emblematic than abstract as it often features a more stylistic design.

Combination marks

Combination marks are unique wordmarks combined with a symbol or letter mark. Unlike the other visual marques, commination marks are 50% type and 50% illustration, these are usefully reserved for more premium brands to convey a sense of sophistication.

Slack

I really enjoyed looking over the progression of slacks identity, methodology, approach and discovery that went into its final logo. It has also shown me different ways you can expand and play on your visual identity on a variety of platforms only using basic abstract and consistent design/colours. It has also gained me greater knowledge into the copyrighting issue and how some visual marques can be harder to copyright.

What have I learned?

This class has deepened my knowledge on visual identity. I have gained a greater knowledge in differentiating my brand from others as well as maintaining constancy throughout my brand. I have also learned more about sketching visual marques and the needs for different stylistic approaches to it. I will now begin implementing these measures into my brand.
