Week 3, Milkshakes Flowers and Zubats- Oh No….

Overview

For week 3 of the 3D digital literacy part of my course, I was instructed to build both a milkshake cup and flower vase as my workshop pieces with building a Zubat Pokémon as my assignment piece.

When doing the milkshake cup, I didn’t have much trouble while following along with the step-by-step videos left. I had a little difficult near the bottom of the cup as it was a little wonky looking however it didn’t inhibit me from doing everything else I had to, so I didn’t have to restart the entire cup over again I just left it with the small quirk it had.

Other than the small quirk in my cup shown in the picture, there wasn’t many issues with the cup. I had a bit of trouble while making the straw due to it being my first time using a Bezier curve in blender however with a bit of time and lots of rewinding and rewatching of the videos I soon found out how to create it and was left with what I would say is quite the perfect looking straw if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out how to create the bended parts of the straw which makes it look more like the ribbed parts of a plastic straw, in a way that I liked and so I left my straw without them which I thought made the straw look more like that of a paper one which all fast-food places now give you.

After finishing the straw for my milkshake cup, I had a very good-looking model which I was pretty proud of and so moved onto making my next workshop model which was the flowerpot model.

Now when I started working on the flower vase model, I struggled BIG TIME with getting the shape right for the vase. Even following the videos confused me as I had no idea where I was going wrong with the model. Eventually I decided to just delete the monstrosity and call the work on the milkshake my work for that day, I just figured I needed to take a break for that day and sleep on it and so I did.

I returned to blender the following day to get to work on the vase and after resting on the subject I did manage to get farther with the vase than before, I found it easier to understand the videos on it and got as far as to finish the actual modelling part of it (bar the leaves which I had trouble with as I was confused how to actually cut them out of the plane with the knife tool which I now understand after doing the Zubat model). I was colouring the petals of the flower I had created when my Blender program crashed, and I lost EVERYTHING.  (reason being I forgot to save the model as I went along)

For this reason, I do not have a model to show images of and so have this image to convey that I do not have a model for this to show off.

Finally, after creating the workshop models it was time to tackle the assignment model and when I say I struggled with this model I mean I STRUGGLED with this model. I began working on the model at roughly 2pm and by around 5pm the same day I had already scrapped and restarted the entire thing around 6 times trying to figure out why the mouth of the Zubat wouldn’t come out properly. By around my 7th attempt at creating my Zubat model I just decided to leave the mouth how it lined up and moved onto the ears which turned out to look a little wonky however by that point I was so exhausted that I decided to call that work a night and closed my laptop down (after making sure to save it this time).

The next day I got to work on the legs and from there everything seemed to be smooth enough sailing. I finished the Zubat model around 5pm that day and while it wasn’t the prettiest in the world it was a product of my endless suffering that I was going to be proud of even if I had to force myself to be proud. In the end I was left with this amazing monstrosity to be proud of.

After Thoughts

Overall week 3’s assignments were trickier to work on than I would like to admit, the Milkshake was pretty easy but the other two were nightmares to work on and it’s safe to say that every 5 seconds now I will be making sure to save my progress because I am sick of losing fully built models to the power of a blender crash or forgotten save. Blender shall no longer defeat me!
