I was assigned to Group 14 with Arlo, Luca and Malcolm. Our film is called ‘Adam’ which is a Unity animation.

After we watched the film, we made a google slide where we all took notes on the different film language within the clip so that we could see each others notes and add onto them.

We then talked about what film language element we wanted to write and talk about individually. Arlo went with Cinematography, Malcolm Mise en Scene, Luca lighting and I went with sound.

After watching through the film a few times, I looked up some behind the scene interviews and concept art where the creators talked about how the film was made so that I understood more what the film was about and what the intentions were from the creators’ point of view.

I found that the creators wanted to make the robots seem as human as possible by not going overboard with the robotic sounds and by making their eyes look as human as possible.

Using my own knowledge on how to analyse film by learning it from Moving Images, I was able to add some terminology to my analysis.

For some of my notes, I’d like to elaborate on some and add others as I wasn’t able to in my presentation as to not go over the time limit and because I only did sound.

-A fade in to unnatural machine-like breathing creates a sound bridge between the scenes. This is to make the scenes seem like they are connected in some way and like Adam is dreaming of the figures. The figures could also be metaphorical in their existence as they could mean freedom and Adam dreaming about them could be him dreaming about being free. An ambience plays at the beginning to add to the dream-like quality to the setting to further add to this.

-The sound of him ripping the orange wrappings off himself sound like they’re shrink-wrapped plastic which is common for wrapping mechanical pieces. Adam tearing it off can be symbolic of him not accepting his mechanical fate and trying to break free from it.

-The rest off the robots that Adam meets looks exactly like him and have similar body language which shows that he doesn’t stand out and blends into the crowd. This makes him seem almost unimportant and that his experience is the same as everyone else.

-When Adam looks at the guards, it’s in a low angle which shows that the soldiers may believe they’re superior and threatening. When Adam looks at them, none of the guards give him eye contact or acknowledges his existence which further proves their superiority.

I believe working in group made me more assertive as I tried to communicate a lot more with my group by asking questions whenever I got stuck and by trying to set up a designated Discord call, which ended up not working due to technical difficulties. We also weren’t able to meet up I wasn’t able to come into presentation day due to the bad weather. But we instead decided to time ourselves individually which added up to just about ten minutes. Our time management skills were also good as we were all able to complete our slides on time.
