Week 4: Retopology

The final sculpt:

I began making loops around the mouth, nose, horns and joints, being mindful of the other loops and how they would connect. I connected them with planes, keeping everything as low-poly as possible.

I realised the biggest problem would be connecting the neck to the head. Since the head had more polys than the body, I wasn’t sure how to connect the two without lots of loop-cutting, which would make the body unnecessarily complex.

This was my first attempt:

I talked to Henry about this version of the retopology, and he made a few suggestions – namely that I should try adding a mask shape to the creature’s face. I had forgone the typical mask shape as my sculpt did not have eyes, but it definitely helped.

Overall, this process was much easier (and went much faster!) than my last attempt at retopology, a year ago.
