running jump

This is how the jump I did in class ended up looking. I found drawing the line of action first to actually be really helpful.

long_jump_test

The overall effect is ok the arms are a bit awkward looking when they are coming down at the end as the size isn’t consistent. I also think the body doesn’t come down enough when the character lands the timing is a bit off as well. For the final one this is something I need to test out more and have more of a play about with.

I found some videos I wanted to use as references to see how the body moves through the air.

I will be using this as my main reference for the final submitted jump.

Taking from my first attempt and all the reference videos I moved onto doing the version I will be submitting.

hurdle

I need to finish the loop for it and to improve the actual jump portion but I am happy with the start. The actual jump portion looks more like floating than jumping over an actual hurdle, I think I need to work on the limbs more to make it look more powerful.

To do this I will try pushing the poses with more exaggeration and hold key poses for longer as well.

While working on my one I continued to do the class exercises which helped to inform the final piece.

I found this helpful by getting me to think about the line of action in the character to not just make it look accurate but to help put personality into it so it isn’t as flat and generic looking.

I redrew over my sketchy drawing really trying to focus on keeping the character a consistent size

run_jump

it has lost some of the freer movement my sketch had but I really want to focus on proportions and being consistent. I think I will have to add some in-betweens on this and maybe do it on ones.

run_jump_cleaner

I think I may make it go back to just being on 2s as it is nearly too smooth and has lost some of its punchiness.

This was some of the notes I was given in class on the last day

  • more anticipation and reaction for land
  • have actual jump portion on ones.

based on these notes I have done this

run_jump_wip

I still need to add more anticipation and reaction but it is a good start.

after I added this in I went over and did a clean line layer. I think parts still need a lot of tweaking and cleaning as some bits of the body like the hands and feet aren’t consistent in size.

run_jump_wip2

I took this then cleaned it up for the final version

I actually like how this turned out I feel like I have progressed since the running exercises we did for the last assignment. I do think I maybe should have added the head turning with the run but in the reference she didn’t move her head. I did break away from the reference with adding more anticipation and reaction but I am not fully confident in doing that yet.
