lip sync

I wanted to do some research on how to lip-sync and here is some resources I found helpful.

I wanted to do all the class exercises before I started my own for the submission. I knew this was going to be difficult to do but it was even harder than my original expectations.

I had to keep going trying to change the mouth shape which was difficult as I am more used to the snow rig. not having a tongue to animate make creating the ‘th’ shape etc a lot more difficult. I am happy enough with it being my first attempt at doing lip-syncing but I need to improve in timing, using the right shape and just having it go smoothly from one mouth pose to the next.

I will be using my audio from the verse of Aliyah interlude’s song ‘IT GIRL’. I am going to be using this since its a trending audio there is lots of video of people already lip-syncing to its and I believe I’ll be able to be really expressive with my animation as well.

I am going to start with blocking the general body movements out first then focus on the lip sync aspect, since that is the main focus its the part I want to spend the most time on getting right.

I used this image of the artist as a costume reference and created a quick mock up of how she would look in my style, I want to try to do a few more tests before I move on to get the bounciness of her hair and see how far I can push my style.

Then I changed my mind and decided to go with 3D as I could make it really expressive as that’s one area in my 2D work I am lacking in is being able to make convincing and appealing facial expressions. So due to this switch I looked up some 3d related tips.

This is how the 3D started out roughly.

It needs a lot of improvement I am going to try exaggerating the mouth movement a little to see if that helps to make it a little more legible.

I am happy with the lip sync here it is just the rest of the facial expressions that need some work. I also want to attempt to make it look like the character is recording the video in selfie mode as well to try to get closer to my reference video. I don’t think think it’ll have many camera shakes etc as I feel like the lip syncing will be lost in that.

I followed a tutorial on making a simple bedroom background

This is how the background ended up looking.

On the last day of class I got some notes which were

  • move hand so it’s not covering mouth
  • exaggerate mouth a little more
  • differentiate a little bit in mouth shapes
  • keep background colours similar so no nausea
  • maybe lessen camera movement.

Taking some of these notes this is my final result.

I am really pleased with how this turned out as it was my first time doing any type of lip-sync animation.
