3D Digital Literacy – Week 3, Texturing and UV mapping

For our third week of class, we were talked through how to use and apply textures to models through UV mapping. We were given three models (a dice, coke can and hammer) and asked to create a spaceship to texture using UV mapping.

Below are my three models and the spaceship:

Dice, coke can and hammer:

Out of the three models, I found the dice the easiest and quickest to texture and the hammer the hardest to understand. Despite that, following along with the videos and working through them helped me understand a bit better how UV mapping works and how best to cut up a model before unfolding it. I thankfully didn’t run into too many issues and I think all the UV mappings turned out fairly well.

Spaceship:

Making this spaceship was pretty interesting to say the least. I did my best to recreate the reference while keeping it to pretty basic shapes and I think it turned out ok. I managed to unfold each piece of the model with minimal issues, thankfully they weren’t too difficult. I then found some simple metal and vent textures online and used Photoshop to map out where each texture should go. Although my spaceship is missing a window, I think it turned out pretty well and I’m proud of how it looks.
