CONCEPT DESIGNER/ARTIST

A Concept Designer or Concept Artist is someone who is responsible for style and look of a project. With the help of a design brief that is usually given to them by the Producer, they will create sketches using this brief as a reference point. These sketches will include various designs such as characters, objects and environments, different types of clothing on a character or different colour variants for a car to best suit the producer’s vision of the project.

These sketches are a vital part of the process as they will be used to help animators, programmers, publishers and producers understand the style of how the project will look.

When creating a portfolio, it is important to showcase your work professionally and that the quality of your work is at a suitable standard as not only will you competing with other artists for the job but its important to make your ideas clear and concise so that it will be understandable to those who aren’t in the art industry as well.

Here are some examples of concept art for the character Pyke from League of Legends:

It’s also important to try and base your portfolio on things you know you enjoy working on as well as the job that you are aiming for. If you base your portfolio on things that you are more interested and passionate about then you’re more likely to produce better work. However, it is also important to show the employer that you are capable of different styles and that you’re a versatile artist, so it might be a good idea to reach out of your comfort zone and improve on the areas you find less appealing.

It is most likely that you will be required to have experience working within an animation before your will be hired to work as a concept artist, so it is not considered an entry level job. Most employers will be looking to hire people with a minimum of three years of experience working in the industry, so for students like myself, it’s a good idea to try and find some form of placement to work part time while studying to strengthen their CV.

Job Opportunity Research

As research for my second assignment in Professional Practise, I began to research different job vacancies for Concept Artist’s. One position that grabbed my attention at “Rebellion” because I have been a fan of their games for a few years. I was also able to find the same job application on Indeed which helped me create a more accurate CV using the employers name and business address but it has since been taken down at the time of me writing this.

I felt it was important to try and base both my CV around what this specific job advertisement had writing in it. To also improve on my cover letter I went onto the Rebellion website and had a look at their news page to see their most recent projects.

FEEDBACK:

For my CV feedback I was told that the majority of it was fine but there were small tweaks that could be made aesthetically and that I should remove the GCSE part.

With my cover letter I was told to also make aesthetic changes as the colour differences made the cover letter and CV look like they were sent from separate people, as well as to add some more information on the companies current projects.
