Week 04 Journeying Immersively

This week we examined immersive storytelling, including micro and macro animations – and some examples. These micro and macro animations are able to make a more engaging and interactive experience for the user on apps, sites and other interactive designs.

What are macro interactions?

Macro is a term that basically means observing something from afar, or considering the overall product as a holistic design. In UX, these macro interactions come into play from page to page, and section to section on a site.

What are micro interactions?

Micro interactions are easier to define. These are small moments where the user and design interact. These can be subtle animations in a site such as a scrollbar, notification animations, loading screen animations and many others.

These interactions are important to help give an immersive and complete experience, as they can break up the monotony of a static design. It also provides direct user feedback, helping solidify and confirm the user’s expectations when clicking on a button for example. The user hovers over the button, and the button can grow bigger in scale. When the user clicks on the button, the button can change its background colour.
