For our second week’s study, we focused on composition and perspective. We did this by sketching 12 different possible backgrounds for our animated world (which we are currently working on ideas for as groups). Our second task was to try and point out the perspective and composition the animator is trying to put across to the audience to divert their visual attention. (Using the character’s surroundings).
The following thumbnails for our animations were drawn on painter essentials, using a Wacom Intuos M drawing tablet. A lot of inspiration for these drawings came from the Noir film style. Examples of some of these references are seen below the thumbnail drawings.
When studying the composition from some of our favourite films or shows, I have learnt that the director and animator uses the backgrounds and foregrounds of the scene to draw the audiences attention to a certain point in the frame. In the examples below, you can see that the edges of buildings and houses are being used to point lines of sight towards a characters position, or just a place in the frame they want the audience to be paying attention to. These lines of sight are highlighted in these images below, using bright green and red lines.
The Films and TV shows referenced for these studies are; “LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS”, “The Amazing World Of Gumball” and “Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse”.
