To better my pitch I needed to back up what I was saying, so I had to do some research to validate my points. I wanted to research all about global warming and climate change. I took to the news headlines for some shocking sentences that would catch the audiences attention and make them really pay attention to what I was saying. This images below are the headlines I had chosen to include in my pitch and look further into.
All of these headlines are current which made me want to include them even more, because these are on the news right now so I know it is important to others. I tried to select the headlines with the most shocking language that would really captivate any audience for example hellscape, intense storms and plagues. There was so many other headlines I could of chosen showing me that it is so current every news station is covering it. I wanted to do some more research into this so I then took to more mainstream research,
What is Global Warming?
Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released as people burn fossil fuels.Despite ups and downs from year to year, global average surface temperature is rising
What is Climate Change?
Changes to the climate system include:
- Rising ocean levels – Rising temperatures are causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt, adding more water to the oceans and causing the ocean level to rise. Oceans absorb 90% of the extra heat from global warming: warmer water expands, and so our oceans are taking up more space.
- Ocean acidification – Ocean acidification occurs when the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide and becomes more acidic. It is often called the ‘evil twin’ of climate change.
- Extreme weather events – Climate change is causing many extreme weather events to become more intense and frequent, such as heatwaves, droughts, and floods.
Climate change can also affect people and ecosystems. For example:
- Flooding of coastal regions – Coastal cities are at risk from flooding as sea levels continue to rise.
- Food insecurity – High temperatures, extreme weather events, flooding, and droughts can damage farmland. This makes it difficult for farmers to grow crops and means that their yield of crops each year is uncertain.
- Conflict and climate migrants – Climate change is a stress multiplier – it can take existing problems, such as lack of food or shelter, and make them worse. This can cause people to fight over resources (food, water, and shelter), or to migrate.
- Damage to marine ecosystems – Rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and ocean anoxia (lack of oxygen) are damaging to marine life such as fish and coral reefs.
What did I learn from this research?
- I found out what causes climate change
- I found out the effects of climate changes around the world
- I found various websites people can visit if they want to help, for example : Green GB Website
- I was surprised at how much shocking facts that I did not know or how many projections I wasn’t aware of. This was shocking and worrying.
- I learned all about the coldest 5 years in UK history and the warmest, the warmest are the most current years, this is scary and only getting worse.
Reflection
I think I need to do some more research on climate change today and I want to incorporate young people, maybe watch some ted talks on the matter. I want to see what young people know about global warming and see how I can come up with a product that would help that change. I also want to brainstorm some ideas for app ideas that can lead me in a direction that can help get young people involved in the solution. I learned alot from this research on the topic and feel I can come up with good ideas for apps now.
