Case Study 1- Sustainability

Emile Cohl’s Fantasmagorie

Artist Emile Cohl created the first animated cartoon, Fantasmagorie . This animation showcases the origins of animation and its lack of sustainability. The animation was created using 700 drawings on illuminated glass, Emile Cohl then printed them in negative to give a chalkboard effect. The Fantasmagorie animation lasts a total of 1 minute and 20 seconds. The means of creation for this animation is not sustainable as a lot of resources are used up for a very short amount of time, although animation is one of the most sustainable art mediums currently existing it’s origins were not always sustainable as seen by the creation process of Fantasmagorie, each frame required its own individual piece of paper which caused a large amount of waste when scaled up.
