Illustration – Observational Drawings (2)

Along side my work on my zines, I continued to create limited time observational drawings. I was inspired by photos online, my trip to Edinburgh over the Easter holidays, my own zines during this time and movies I was watching. I worked on developing my style by taking human characters such as Captain Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean” (2003 – 2017) and characters created by other Artists and make up Artists online I found on Pinterest and converting them into my own drawing style.

I remembered to keep these drawings quick, yet still show development and understanding of how to draw these subject matters. Although they’re all not perfect, a sense of life still surrounds the image, which is why I like all of them.

Materials I used: Pencil, coloured pencil and coloured markers.

Drawings from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”

I created these images while I felt inspired by the movie. Personally, I think Mr. Gibbs is the most like his character, besides Jack Sparrow who I found I captured pretty well too. I gave myself the challenge of drawing these as the film was running.

I find drawing buildings my hardest challenge. I much prefer the look of the slightly more natural objects such as the people, food and the characters created by them. However, I did set myself the challenge of drawing some buildings quickly.

I love this spread of pages the most, because of the man on the left hand side. I feel he is the best drawing in this book, along side the drawings of the girls in pink pencil from the birthday party pages and the fruit bowl. I had tuns of fun drawing them, because I already had practice with drawing girls from my zines and the fruit bowl from other piece such as life drawings in GCSEs.

Illustration – Final Piece

For my final piece, I leaned more into the relationship of me and my bunny, Wiggle, who had sadly passed away last year during A-Levels. I wanted to make my final piece have more of a personal meaning compared to my other stories, still allowing for the viewers to use their own imagination to add or take away from the story and its meaning.

Elements of my finalized images were based off some pieces from my zine too.

I researched print shops in Belfast and Antrim, and came across Windsor photo prints shop down near Queen’s University. I tested out how 3 of my pages would look professional printed. I was extremely happy with the result. I got pages 3, 5 & 6 printed off.

I discovered an error within one of my canvas sizes – Instead of an A3 size, it was in a size closer to a large square shape. In the future I’ll be able to watch out for this mistake and fix it now that I know this.

Before I pulled the final elements of my final piece together, I edited tiny layers of my piece. An example of this would be the colour opacity and the placement of some colours. I created an original for each page, with the larger colour palette, then I added each page to another canvas on Procreate and edited them into the final purple, pink & blue colour palette.

I taught myself how to only drawing needed information within my sketches. For example, in the 8th page were my character is hugging her bunny, I didn’t want to add any extra information in the background, or even the rest of her body, focusing only on the hug. The warmer lighting of the pink and purple contrasts with the colder background, creating a more comforting and safe hug, yet I picked these colours to create a small sense of mystery.

I asked some of my classmates about these 3 pages, and immediately they told me to change the colour of the boarders around the elements, which is what I have now changed in my final piece.

Illustration – Wall & Tape Paintings (Kerrie & Elin’s Task)

The second day we had Kerrie and Elin, we experimented on a much larger scale than the previous Tuesday when we had them. We took one of our drawings we added more detail to, and painting it directly onto the wall in the Illustration space on the 3rd floor.

We also created tape drawings on the windows with masking tape, and other coloured wash tape if we wanted to add colour.

I enjoyed this task so much, because I loved the idea of adding a painting directly on the wall. I had never created a painting on a white wall, so as much as I tried not to make any mistakes, I didn’t expect the paint to drip down the wall so much. I ended up liking it however, imaging the painting melting into the wall.

While looking at the original images, I had difficulty understanding what was off with the image. I used a purple colour and changed the opacity over the image with the help of Ashling. I discovered the colour palette didn’t convey the emotions I intended the viewer to feel.

The colour palette I have chosen resembles some elements of mystery and danger, without using the colour red, orange or black, which was something I found the most successful.

Other edits I experimented with.

Following up from this, I began to plan out the rest of the panel in my sketchbook. I started off by creating the images the full size of the page, I later changed it to add more of a contrast to each page – Leaning more towards the layout style of a graphic novel.

Adding onto the development of my final piece, I worked backwards to help me understand where I wanted my narrative to go. I created the final image of my story next (which later turns into the 2nd last image). This allowed me to build upon the panels in the middle of my story, to held me structure the narrative – Helping me get from “A to B.”

Illustration – Development for my Final Piece (1)

During the last week I decided where I would like to take the direction for the end of my project. I am inspired by Children’s Picture Books and the research I did for my presentation on Graphic Novels – I intend to create pages inspired by one of my zines. I knew I wanted to create another zine or a story similar to this. This is why I picked the idea of a picture book. I can freely experiment with the layout of my pages, both in a style mixed between a picture book and a graphic novel.

I originally wanted the small piece “Greed & Gluttony” to be my final piece, but I lacked inspiration for it. To tie my project together well, developing one of my already existing would help me understand the errors within that specific zine and my portfolio so far.

I decided to re-imagine and improve on my zine “A Ticket For One.” I felt the other zines were developed as much as I could for allowing a natural development of my experimentation, which is why I didn’t create a new zine for my final piece.

1st Image I created for my recreation.

Practice Tree for the background.

I asked Ashling for some advice, and made corrections and edits to my image. I took away the blur effect in the background, which I used in my practice image too. I edited the trees, adding more of a fluffy/ snowy texture to them.

To create depth I lowered the opacity in the trees in the background. I made the background taller, and my character smaller, enhancing the size difference between her and her environment.

Creating these slight changes already allowed me to see the improvement, and direction I could take these images.

I made an adjustment to the story line, removing my creature character – Focusing more on the relationship of my female character and the bunny.

2nd Image.

I was happier with this image, however I felt the communication of the story was lost. I corrected this by adding in my bunny character, and creating a physical distance between them. I created a relationship with their colour palette too.

3rd Image.

I took the original image into Photoshop too. I cleaned up the image, and changed the colour palette with the adjustment/ level/ colour tools.

Illustration – 2 & 5 Minute Life Drawings (Kerrie & Elin’s Task)

Today we looked at 2 and 5 minute drawings. Both Kerrie and Elin posed for us, and a few of my classmates offered to pose too. We then took 3 out of the 9 drawings we had created to refine the drawing. I limited my colour, and only used the coloured pencil to suggest colour in some parts of my sketches.
