For our industry materials assignment, part of our assignment is writing a cover letter for a job position in a local creative studio. My understanding of the cover letter is that it needs to be tailored for the studio and the job position themselves, highlighting why you should be considered for the position, how you meet the criteria and what you can offer the studio.

My main point of reference for how to structure my own cover letter came from this website, (How NOT to write a Cover Letter (and How to) (alexanderrichtertd.com)), in addition to the example blog provided to us on blackboard from previous student Conor Presley, which I read through and took notes on what structure to format my letter in.

Furthermore, at the time of writing my cover letter, a placement scheme was being provided by Northern Ireland Screen, with job openings from several local studios. I decided to use one of the openings that I felt confident that I fit the criteria for and chose the Trainee Animator position with the studio Paper Owl.

Below is a PDF link to the cover letter I wrote based on the criteria of the placement position, with the job position also being included. In addition, the word count of the cover letter meets the word limit of 300 words.

Additionally, around this time our class had done mock interviews with industry professionals, which I ended up doing very well in. From my experience, I learned that you should go in knowing what you want from the job, being aware of and communicating your strengths to potential employers and showing enthusiasm for what you do. In addition, I also found that speaking honestly and quickly to questions asked is a huge benefit as it shows you can give confident answers in a short amount of time. Animation is something that I have a large amount of passion for, and I am confident after my mock interview that I will do well when going for proper interviews in future job applications.
