Week 7 IXD301: Critique

This week we received our final critique on our portfolio sites. I was asked to insert a background image to break up the white space a little on my landing page. Instead of this, I decided to make the text larger as I could not get an image I wanted to sit correctly, This was received well.

We also received class feedback using a miro board.

I found this process really enlightening, I find it hard to determine when I’m making the correct design decisions by myself so fresh eyes are always good, it allows me to see strengths and weaknesses that I had missed.

Evaluation

Overall the project went well I learned a new piece of powerful software and new tools for designing for the web and designing with content, Where I fell short I believe that my time management could have been better at points. My overall goal was to build a more ambitious portfolio website than I had previously and I succeded, My brand was altered from its original format which I’m still unsure about but I accept that this is a subjective thing if it were a live project and a client wanted changes made they would get them with little to no protest from me as I can get paid and then distance myself from the project by not including it within my portfolio. I believe I could be better at designing case studies but this can be improved with more research and practice.

Elements project.

We received our new brief for another project, The project is to design an educational interface for either children or for undergraduates. The subject to educate on is the periodic table, we can either design a full periodic table or use 5 elements. We must build a functioning prototype to show how our interface will work. We can design for any medium as long as it is educational to either of the groups.

I began researching right away and believe I have a route to gain further insights. I spoke to some family members with children of the age group to try and find out how their children navigate devices and what devices they can use.

I also made a few questions on the app Quora to cast my net wide and see if I can gain any insights into children around the world or gleam some way that this problem is already being tackled.

I decided to make a questionnaire and contact some local schools to see if they will post it on their social media pages to get information from parents without them having to take too much time out of their busy lives to meet with me in person.
