Redesigning, Style Exploration and Cementing our Plot

This week we received feed back on our presentation (noted in the previous post), and my group got to work on receiving this and talked about how to approach our new designs.

EXPANDED STYLE RESEARCH

We split into groups with the remaining class time to do some more specific style research, focusing on texturing and taking a look at some short films and their approaches to texturing/modelling. Throughout that time we found a lot of artists that we liked the texture work on. I think finding these on Sketchfab works a lot in our favour, as we can have a nice up close look and try to breakdown how each of these were modelled and textured to get their own style.

As you can see we are leaning into this painterly, illustrative almost storybook like style. We still need to have a discussion to pin point exactly how we are going to achieve this in approach and what exactly our designs will entail (with each of our varying skills and talents in Substance and Blender) and how we can simplify these into an easy workflow.

STORYBOARDS

My group decided to meet up and get our new narrative sorted out sooner rather than later. I thought the best way to approach this was by cutting and pasting out elements that we liked from each of our storyboards and putting them together to form a new narrative, and then any new elements that we thought of from our critiques I quickly sketched out. Something in particular that I really liked was how Eoin wanted our credits to be, using character sheets with our names and some stats would furhter connect how we lean further into the DND aspect.

Now we just have to get our character designs chosen so that we can redraw these storyboards for the final version!

Practice Models

I went ahead and started to work in blender for some quick layout designs, I was only able to get one done at this time and I worked on the ending area. I just knew this area best, since my group actually hadn’t sat down to discuss our layout for the cave, so I wanted to sketch some of this out as well. For the ending area, i based this off a dining room area with some shelves, and I focussed mainly on the table contents since that is what will be in the main shot. I made some quick cardboard standees and use a isometric sphere with 1 subdivision to make the D20 dice. Then I just made the mat and character sheets from cubes I scaled almost flat.
