Coursework 1 – Film Analysis

Short film: I’m a pebble

-The Story Narrative:

“I am a Pebble” is a graduation short film created by co-directors Yasmine Bresson and Maxine Le Chaplain from ESMA 3D. In this short film animation which my group analyses (Group 6) we watched this short story that follows a young lonely otter named by the animator as “Bubble.”

This Otter lives and plays with three mossy stones that she believes them as her own family, imaging them as real otters, but as she becomes increasingly more and more aware of their true nature, she must face her loneliness. This beautifully animated short is heart-warming story about family and but the sad cold loneliness the otter finds.

As a group we meet up and talked about what in the animation we wanted to all focus on, and we used a question to help us base our film analyses around on “How does the use of film language techniques convey emotion to the viewer?”

So, when we were analysing the film, we looked at the four film languages of film and split that work up in four and talk about.

  • Cinematography
  • Sounds
  • Mise-un-scene
  • Editing

We all looked at all four areas and then when we meet up again where we showed what areas of films, we feel most convent on talking about. I picked editing.

– -Editing

When making my PowerPoint slides, I researched and looked at the “I’m a peddle” website where I read and watched videos about how they worked to making the animation. I looked at the pre-production of the animation and how they planned the style. The website was very good in showing the progress to cartoon paint brush to 3d animation style

The film editing team had an “objective to give off the impression that we painted a sculpture.” as a “picture book” and they used Invisible editing to seamless display that through the short film. The invisible editing is popular in conventional Hollywood style of filming. However, this animation also used it to show how the leading protagonist can easily and efferently see these rocks as a family so quickly and even when we the otter happy. There is a feeling of a sad loneliness that comes with it that I feel and I think the audiences also feel when watching.

The smooth and seamless invisible editing is used to help in changing editing’s style from a 3D animation a dreamish 2D artistic style of animation. This 2d paintbrush aspect style also stands out to display to the audiences when and where the animation is in the otter’s imagination or when it’s out of it.

The editing style is very documentary style of filming taking slow-paced editing that takes longer one takes following the protagonist (The Otter) around the scene. This Style gives a feeling to the audience of being a Point of view (POV) of someone who often are watching from a far.

This is technique is used to get audiences immerged into following this creature life and to add a sense of realism in the lovely 2D, 3D cartoonist style.
