Animation – Pre-Production

Once I had all the development aspects for my animation, I made a start on the pre-production for it, starting with deciding on character designs and drawing a more detailed and anatomically correct full bodies of each character.

Character designs:

Trans guy:

Out of all the trans guy ideas I had initially drawn up for my development, I settled on using the top right idea as I liked how he turned out the most. I used both the headshot and chibi drawing of him as reference when I was drawing up his more detailed full body. I think it turned out pretty well, I’m proud of how he looks. I think his outfit suits him well and he should be easy enough to animate when I get to that stage.

NB character:

With the female characters, I ended up deciding on using the one in the middle and I’ve also decided that the character looks more non-binary as opposed to female. Similar with the drawing the trans guy, I used the chibi and headshot versions of the character as reference when drawing up to the fullbody to make sure it’s as accurate as possible. I think they turned out pretty well too, I think their outfit suits them and I think they should be easy enough to animate when the time comes.

Storyboards:

For my storyboards, I made a point of keeping them as loose sketches to keep them somewhat simple and not over complicate things from the start. I feel that, even though the anatomy and such isn’t quite always right in them, I can see roughly how I built up the characters and the backgrounds which I can therefore use as reference when it comes to the actual animation.

Animatic:

When creating my animatic, I tried not to make the scenes too long despite trying to get close to the 30 second mark. I think some scenes might still be a bit too long but I should be able to edit and fix things like shortening the scenes a little when it comes to animating. I think most of the timing is alright though.
