Contextual Research – Aesthetics

For our eighth week of contextual research, we were asked to do some research into the topic of aesthetics. According to Philosophybasics, aesthetics is a actually a branch of philosophy that that is “concerned with the nature and appreciation of art, beauty and good taste.” Also, according to the same site, the word “aesthetics” is derived from the Greek word “aisthetikos” which means “of sense perception”.(1)

In terms of animation, aesthetics would relate to the style or how smooth an animation goes along, like the animation is aesthetically pleasing. For example, the animation above is a spinimation based on a song called Pork Soda by Glass Animals. The artists style is pretty to look at which makes it aesthetically pleasing and, on top of that, since it’s a spinimation, each scene within the animation easily flow into each other which adds on to what makes it aesthetically pleasing to watch. All in all, the animation is really satisfying and impressive to watch even though it’s pretty short.

In conclusion, in my opinion, I think aesthetic is something that’s sort of important to think about and consider when making an animation because an animation that is more aesthetically pleasing to watch is more likely to catch a viewers eye and make them want to watch the animation which could lead to the viewer telling others about said animation.
