For our graphic design & illustration workshop, we were tasked with creating a zine that has 16 pages, including the front and back cover, with a theme of our choice that relates to something we’re interested in. For my zine, I decided to base it around one of my favourite singers Yungblud. Each page spread of my zine will be centred around one of his songs.
When I create my zine, I will probably draw the images myself on my iPad in Procreate the bring them into illustrator to put them together in pages and to add the necessary text to each page.
Spider diagram:
To help work out what sort of things will be on each page, I made a spider diagram. I drew a line out to a song then from the song I linked lyrics and possible imagery that could be connected or shown along with the lyrics. I didn’t fit as many songs in the spider diagram as I would have liked as I ran out of room on the page but I managed to note most of them down.
Mood board:
I created a mood board based on the possible imagery in my spider diagram so that I have a more visual reference of what images I will be using. I made the background of my mood board pink as that’s Yungblud’s signature colour. I did my best to include as many of the relevant images as possible. I think it turned out alright even though I couldn’t work out how to use the magic wand to remove the white parts of the images.
Thumbnails:
After making my mood board and spider diagram, I made some thumbnails to give myself an idea of some of the pages would be laid out. They’re not very neat but they get to the point and clearly show what is possibly going to appear on some of the page spreads. I think all four turned out alright despite the lines not being all that straight.
First couple pages:
I started illustrating the first couple pages for my zine along with the front page as well. On one of the pages, after exporting the page from illustrator, the quality of the footprints went down. I’m not sure how it happened, I tried replacing each footstep individually but the quality of some of them still wasn’t great.
Finished zine:
I brought all the images I had drawn on Procreate into illustrator, put them onto a pink background(as pink is Yungblud’s iconic colour) and added the right lyrics to each page. The images were simple and fun to make, I enjoyed drawing them. I think overall my zine looks pretty good and I’m happy with how it turned out.
