Tom Cartmill is a painter based in Reading, England. His work is mainly black and white paintings that focus on building layers and tearing back through them rather that illustration. The passage of time is one of Cartmills greatest influences. Through his paintings we can see that when he builds upon his work through layers, he often lets things naturally happen to show the passage of time through his work. He is interested in how things can crack and erode and the overall effect that can be left with time. Another interest of Cartmills is memories and how they can intertwine and change with time. Each of his pieces unfolds a story and explains the passage of time uniquely depending on which piece you are looking at. In this piece we can see the multiple layers of white paint over a black background and how they organically crack. The image gives the effect of dried and cracked sand and gives us the image of what the piece would have possibly looked like before the cracks and the passage of time therefore unfolding the story simply be a stationary image. I think Cartmills work shows us the beauty of organic mark making and the inspiration behind it.
