Week 5-Cv Feedback & Proposal Reading

Week 5-Proposal Reading

This class was feedback for our CVs and was introduced to the book ‘A Project Guide to UX Design’ by Russ Unger and Carolyn Chandler.

CV Feedback

Daniel gave us feedback on our CVs to ensure they are industry ready and are fit for its purpose. Creating these CVs will help us get a placement for next year. Even though CVs are pretty simple they are easy to get wrong.

Cvs should be clear and concise with using only a couple of colours, black and white is best though. You want to have a nice layout for your content, you don’t want it all cluttered together or messy. Employers want to look at your CV and easily scan it to look for the information they need. However, all information on the CV should be relevant and necessary, tailor the CV to what your applying for so in my case i’ve tailored to UI/UX job roles or other design jobs.

Below is my first draft of the CV before feedback:

Daniel has suggested the following:

  • Keep same layout however have headers on the left and the content on the left. Helps employers easily look for what they want to know
  • Add link to CV, email, address etc
  • Remove icons as the links should be clickable anyways
  • Add a small bio about me to let employers know my background, history and interests.
  • Make my name smaller as it takes over the whole page
  • Make sure all the spacing is the same between all content to keep it consistent

Proposal Reading

We were asked to have a read at the second edition book ‘A Project Guide to UX Design’ by Russ Unger and Carolyn Chandler.  This book is describes to be ‘for user experience designers in the field or the making’.

The book is super insightful it has 16 chapters and covers a massive range of things UX designers should and need to know. This book is good to look back on to reference something and isn’t just a one time read.

Some of the chapter titles are:

  • The Project Ecosystem
  • Proposals for Consultants and Freelancers
  • User Research
  • Personas
  • Design Principles
  • Content Strategy
  • Sitemaps and Task Flows
  • Prototyping
  • Design Testing with Users

This book helps anyone starting out a new project and covers everything you need to know to produce the work and complete the task.

For this assignment I focused on chapter 3 which is Proposals for Consultants and Freelancers. This really helped me understand what a project proposal is and how to effectively complete one as a freelancer for clients. It gave me insight to why and when you should write a proposal. It had lots of tips and tricks, what to include and how to approach starting to think about a design proposal. It takes you from creating the proposal from Title page to acknowledgement and sign off.
