Our groups had once again been switched around and I found myself in the group creating the world around the “Squid God,” where a journalist found an abandoned submarine that has some disturbing passengers on board. For designs, I looked at horror references, like the queen beast from the game “Drakengard,” the Lost from “Code Vein,” and the spirits from the “Spirit Hunter” series. I wanted to get across that twisted and grotesque aura that the monsters from those games also radiate.

I aimed to create demented creatures that would reside within the submarine. I wanted to exaggerate their limbs to try to create a disturbing picture and atmosphere.

I looked a lot into horror imagery so I could bring this world to life as much as I could.

Our week assignment was also to look into colour and it’s part in animation. Colour can help enhance the animation significantly, but it’s not necessary (Frankenweenie.) Colour connotations are important as they can impact the viewers’ emotions about the animation. I experimented with different colours on outlines of landscapes, and also coloured my composition thumbnail from the previous week.

I also looked at stills from my favourite movies/animations and looked at the colours used and what they make me feel. I looked at Ouran Highschool Host Club, Treasure Planet and Bakumatsu Rock.

I like the muted colours in this scene as it has a sense of tension. The blues in the background are so pretty and contrast to the muted pink and white in the characters. The characters were going through a dispute before this scene and the dark colours symbolize their turmoil. There is also lightning outside which is a fear of one of the character’s. The dark colour palette increases the apprehension we feel during the scene.

Treasure Planet is a steampunk adventure and it is clearly translated in this still from the movie. The blue of the sky looks smoky, with the white moon appearing digital. I like the colours of the characters’ clothes because they look so average, which is a great choice for Jim, since he is an average teenager, while John Silver is trying to appear friendly and normal unlike the rest of the crew who are evil.

This is a scene from Bakumatsu Rock. The colours are very bright, especially the sky which signals a new beginning as this is one of the opening scenes from the Anime. The character, Sakamoto Ryoma, is very, very colourful, with red as his main colour theme to show his passion for rock. The blue highlights in the hair make the red so much more vibrant.
