IXD304 Week 7- The story of eBooks

What are eBooks?

An eBook is a non-editable book that is converted into a digital format that can be read on screens EG Mobile, computer etc.

Characteristics

  1. text should be uneditable to prevent users from potentially changing the content of the book.
  2. they are reflowable which means that they fit to the screen they are being displayed on for the best reading experience possible.

Layouts

Single-column grid– used for continuous running text EG essays, books etc. The block of text itself is the main feature of the page.

Two-column grid- generally used to control a lot of text or to present different types of information in clear, separate columns.

multi-column grid– these are used for magazines and websites as you have the most creative control here to decide where to place text and images.

Modular grid- used for newspapers, calendars, charts etc. This is good for accurately separating lots of different bits of information in one page.

Use Space as a Graphical Element

Blank space helps to separate images and text throughout your site, making it mire enjoyable to browse and read. It adds drama and helps to sustain the interest of the reader.

Determine Margins

although its on a screen, making sure that you create a greater gutter (margins on either side of the page) is super important. On average, a human can comfortably read 11 words per line and so it is important to not overwhelm the reader by flooding the pages with words with no margin. The user is more likely to lose interest and not continue reading.

Text Weight

Just like websites, contrasting fonts is super important to continue to engage the reader and make the type hierarchy clear to see. For example it is successful to have a really think larger typeface for the title then a smaller regular version of the same type that can be used for the body copy.

It is also important to ensure that if possible your text has more than two weight options as the lack of diversity can be limiting EG a light italic weight of the same font would be perfect when captioning images etc as it still fits with the text style however you know that the caption is a separate section and not part of the main body copy.

Example of narrative storytelling-Apple- great marketing, turns something ‘boring’ like selling monitors into an immersive story that you want to read.
